ACRE names honorees
The Association of Capitol Reporters and Editors presented awards for excellence in state government reporting to several Illinois journalists during its annual convention in Washington, D.C. Tom Weber of the University of Illinois at Springfield's WUIS public radio station won first place in radio beat reporting and Kate Clements of The(Champaign) News-Gazette won first place in beat reporting for newspapers under 75,000 circulation. Weber's colleagues Bill Wheelhouse and Sean Crawford tied for second-place honors in radio beat reporting and Anthony Man, formerly of the (Decatur) Herald & Review, was awarded third place in the category for newspapers under 75,000 circulation.

GOP picks chair
Gary MacDougal, a retired businessman, was elected to head the Illinois Republican Party. MacDougal, a Chicagoan on the United Parcel Service board, was tapped by GOP gubernatorial candidate Jim Ryan. The job came open when Illinois House Minority Leader Lee Daniels resigned as state party chairman. Daniels’ decision to step down came as the feds investigate whether House Republican staff members did campaign work on state time.

State school chief tapped
The former state chief of public schools in Michigan is now Illinois state superintendent of education. Robert Schiller's record of producing improvements in various types of school systems is what made him the board's choice, Chairman Ronald Gidwitz said. Most recently, Schiller was superintendent of Shreveport, La., schools. He also worked as interim superintendent of Baltimore schools.
